Detergent residue, fabric fibres, body oils and hard-water minerals build up inside every washing machine, and eventually you get the musty smell that transfers to clean laundry. When it is time to deal with it you have two options: a DIY mix from the kitchen cupboard, or a product made for the job.
Most articles on this question are written by whoever sells the product. So here is the version with the mechanism explained, including the parts where DIY genuinely wins.
What DIY actually is
The standard recipes are white vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, or chlorine bleach — usually a hot cycle with a couple of cups of vinegar, sometimes followed by baking soda.
Each of those does exactly one of the three jobs the task requires, and none does all three.
The three jobs, and why that decides everything
The film inside a washer is body oil and skin soil, plus undissolved detergent, plus fabric softener — and in hard-water homes, mineral scale underneath it. Removing that needs:
- A surfactant to lift greasy soil off metal and hold it in the water so it drains away.
- Alkalinity, because fats and oils simply do not break down in neutral or acidic water.
- An oxidiser for the stained, set-in part of the film that a surfactant alone will not shift.
Now look at the DIY options against that list.
Vinegar is roughly 5% acetic acid. It is an acid, so it does help with light mineral scale — that part is real. But being acidic is precisely why it cannot break down grease: job two requires alkalinity, and vinegar is the opposite. It also has no oxidiser.
Baking soda is mildly alkaline, which covers part of job two. It has no surfactant and no oxidiser, and combining it with vinegar in the same cycle simply neutralises both into salty water and CO₂. The fizzing looks productive. Chemically it has cancelled itself out.
Chlorine bleach is an oxidiser, but the wrong kind for this. It has no effect on limescale at all, and used at full strength as a monthly routine it is hard on a front-loader's door gasket over time — the component you were trying to protect.
A purpose-made cleaner covers all three at once: a surfactant for the grease, soda ash for the alkalinity, and sodium percarbonate as the oxidiser, plus a water softener so hard water does not blunt the rest.
Where DIY genuinely wins
Two situations, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
Light scale in a well-maintained machine. If you clean regularly and you are only dealing with early mineral film, vinegar will handle it and it costs almost nothing. It needs longer contact and often a second pass, and the smell takes a couple of rinses to clear, but it works.
You need something tonight. A cupboard solution beats waiting two days for a delivery.
What DIY does not do well is established residue. If the machine already smells, the film has set, and an acid alone will not remove it.
Safety and your machine
The genuine risk in DIY is not any single ingredient — it is combinations. Never mix bleach with vinegar or any acid. That reaction releases chlorine gas, and it happens just as readily by accident, when one cleaner follows another in the same drum, as it does on purpose.
Prolonged use of undiluted vinegar is also worth some caution around rubber seals and hoses, though the evidence here is a good deal weaker than the internet suggests, and occasional use is not the problem.
A purpose-made cleaner has one practical advantage: it is dosed for one cycle at a known concentration, so there is nothing to judge and nothing to accidentally combine.
Ease of use
DIY means measuring, often running more than one cycle, and usually some manual scrubbing.
With Seaways Washing Machine Cleaner it is four steps:
- Empty the drum completely — no laundry, no detergent.
- Tear one 4.4 oz packet into the drum.
- Run the Tub Clean cycle, or the hottest normal cycle your machine has.
- Wipe under the door gasket while it is still warm, and leave the door open to dry.
Step three is not optional. The powder is oxygen-based and percarbonate is heat-activated, so a cold cycle wastes a good part of the dose. This is the most common reason any tub cleaner appears not to have worked.
Step four is not optional either, and no product can do it for you. Nothing reaches the underside of a front-loader's door seal except a cloth.
Cost
DIY looks cheaper because the vinegar is already in the cupboard. The honest comparison depends entirely on the state of your machine. For light monthly upkeep, vinegar really is cheaper and it really does work. For a machine that already smells, DIY tends to mean repeated cycles that do not fully solve it — at which point the water, the electricity and the time cost more than the packet would have.
Environmental impact
It is a common assumption that DIY is automatically greener. Vinegar and baking soda are certainly simple materials. But a method that needs three cycles instead of one uses three times the water and power, and that is not a small factor in the total footprint of cleaning an appliance.
On the product side, what is worth checking is specific rather than general: no phosphate builders and no chlorine bleach going down the drain. Our formula uses sodium citrate for water softening in place of a phosphate builder, and the percarbonate finishes as water, oxygen and soda ash.
The verdict
For light, regular upkeep on a machine that does not smell, vinegar is a reasonable choice and we will not pretend it is useless.
For a machine that already smells, or one in a hard-water home, or one that has gone a while, a purpose-made cleaner is doing three chemical jobs that a cupboard acid cannot do at all. That is not a marketing position — it is what the ingredient list is for.
One thing to be clear about either way: this is a cleaner, not a sanitizer, and we make no germ-kill claim for it. It removes the residue that odor-causing bacteria live in, which is why the smell goes. A product that sanitizes a washing machine has to be registered with the EPA for that use.
