How to Descale an Ice Maker: A Step-by-Step Guide

The short version: switch the machine off, empty the ice, run a food-grade descaling solution through it for 20 to 30 minutes, drain, rinse two or three times with fresh water, and throw the first batch of ice away. The whole job takes about half an hour, and most of that is waiting.

Why ice makers scale up faster than almost anything else in the kitchen

Every appliance that heats or holds water eventually collects limescale. An ice maker has two things working against it at once. It runs more or less continuously, cycling fresh tap water through the same lines dozens of times a day, and then it freezes that water — which forces the dissolved calcium and magnesium out of solution and onto the evaporator plate, the water lines and the reservoir walls.

What builds up is a chalky white crust. It insulates the freezing surface, so the machine has to work harder and run longer to produce each batch. In a countertop nugget maker it usually shows up first as ice that tastes faintly of minerals, then as cubes that come out cloudy or hollow, and eventually as a machine that runs and runs without ever filling the bin.

Almost every “my ice maker stopped working” problem that isn't a mechanical fault is this. It is also the one you can fix yourself in thirty minutes.

Five signs it is time to descale

  • Ice production has slowed, or a full cycle takes noticeably longer than it used to.
  • Cubes come out cloudy, soft, hollow, or smaller than normal.
  • The ice has a flat, mineral or slightly metallic taste.
  • You can see white or grey deposit in the reservoir, on the evaporator fingers, or around the water inlet.
  • The machine is louder than it was, or the pump cycles more often than it used to.

In a hard-water household these signs usually appear within two to three months. On softened or filtered water you may go six months or more.

What you need

  • A food-grade descaler. Citric acid is the standard choice for anything that touches drinking water — it dissolves mineral scale without the aggressiveness of hydrochloric, sulfamic or phosphoric acid, and it does not leave a taste behind.
  • Warm water, 104 to 140°F (40 to 60°C). Warm activates the acid. Boiling water can warp plastic reservoirs and damage seals, so do not use it.
  • A soft cloth or a soft-bristled brush for the reservoir corners and the ice chute.
  • About 15 minutes of attention and 20 to 30 minutes of waiting.

Method 1 — machines with a clean or descale cycle

Most built-in and under-counter ice makers, and a growing number of countertop models, have a dedicated cleaning cycle. If yours does, use it.

  1. Turn the machine off and empty all the ice. Every cube. Anything left in the bin will absorb the cleaning solution.
  2. Fill the reservoir with warm water and add the descaler. One 0.35 oz packet per 0.5 L (17 fl oz) of water is the usual dose; use one to two packets for a typical countertop reservoir.
  3. Run the cleaning cycle, then drain. The solution circulates through the pump, the lines and the evaporator — the parts you cannot reach with a cloth.
  4. Refill with clean water and run one or two rinse cycles. Drain each one completely.

Method 2 — machines without a clean cycle

The chemistry is identical. You are simply giving the solution time to work instead of circulating it.

  1. Turn the machine off and empty the ice.
  2. Fill the reservoir with warm water and add the descaler at the same ratio.
  3. Let it stand for 20 to 30 minutes. This is where the work happens — the acid is converting hard scale into a water-soluble form that will simply pour out.
  4. Drain, then wipe the reservoir and the ice chute with a soft cloth. Anything that has loosened will come away with almost no pressure.
  5. Refill with fresh water and run two to three full rinse cycles.

If the scale is heavy or the machine has gone a year or more without attention, expect to repeat the process. A second round on badly neglected build-up is normal, not a sign the descaler failed.

A note on countertop nugget and bullet makers

Nugget, bullet, countertop and built-in machines all descale the same way — the routine above does not change. What does change is access: on most countertop units the reservoir lifts out, which makes it far easier to reach the corners and the underside of the lid with a cloth once the solution has been drained. Do that while the parts are still warm.

How often should you descale an ice maker?

If you are not sure how hard your water is, your local water utility publishes it, and the fastest practical test is your kettle: if it scales up within a few weeks, so will your ice maker.

Four things not to reach for

Vinegar

Vinegar is cheap and it does work on light scale, so it is not a bad idea — it is just a weak one. Household vinegar is around 5% acetic acid, far more dilute than a proper descaling dose, so it needs longer contact and often more than one pass on established build-up. It also leaves a smell that takes several rinses to clear, and nobody wants their first three batches of ice tasting of salad dressing.

Bleach

Bleach is a sanitizer, not a descaler. It has no effect on mineral scale at all, so it cannot solve the problem you actually have. It must also never be combined with an acid descaler in the same reservoir. If your manufacturer specifies a separate sanitizing step, do it after descaling and after a full rinse — never at the same time.

Dish soap

Dish soap cuts grease. Limescale is not grease. All you will get is a reservoir full of suds that takes several rinse cycles to clear.

Heavy-duty mineral acid descalers

Hydrochloric, sulfamic and phosphoric acid descale quickly. They are also aggressive toward the aluminium evaporator, chrome trim and rubber seals inside a domestic ice maker, and they are not food grade. For a machine that makes ice you put in a drink, stay with a food-grade acid.

After you finish: throw the first batch away

Once you have rinsed, run one full production cycle and discard the ice, whichever method you used. It costs you twenty minutes and it is the difference between clean ice and ice carrying a trace of whatever was in the lines.

Then leave the lid open for an hour or so and let the inside dry. Standing water in a closed, dark reservoir is what starts the next problem.

Common questions

Can I descale without taking the machine apart?

Yes, and you should not take it apart. The entire point of running a solution through the water path is that it reaches the pump, the lines and the evaporator without disassembly. Wipe what you can reach and let the descaler handle the rest.

Is descaling the same as cleaning?

No, and the distinction matters. Descaling removes mineral deposit. Cleaning removes soil and film. A descaler is not a disinfectant and we make no germ-kill claim for one — a product that sanitizes an ice machine has to be registered with the EPA for that use.

My machine still runs slowly after descaling. Now what?

Run a second cycle first — heavy build-up frequently needs two. If it is still slow after that, check the water filter and the inlet screen, which clog with the same minerals. If neither is the cause, the problem is likely mechanical rather than scale.

Does the same solution work on other appliances?

Citric acid descales anything that collects limescale: kettles, drip coffee makers, single-serve brewers and espresso machines, water dispensers and distillers, bottles and tumblers, shower heads and faucets. Same deposit, same chemistry. Always follow your appliance manufacturer's own descaling instructions for dose and contact time.
