Search for a washing machine cleaner and you will find people arguing about format as though it were a matter of taste. Liquid people say powders do not dissolve. Powder people say liquids are mostly water. Tablet people like not measuring.
Almost all of it gets the causation backwards. Format is not a preference — it is a consequence. What a cleaner is made of decides what form it is able to take, and one of the most effective ingredients in this category simply cannot exist in a bottle.
First, what is actually in your machine
Washer odor does not come from your clothes. It comes from a film that builds up wherever water sits and never fully dries: the underside of the door gasket, the detergent drawer, the drain lines, and the gap behind the drum you never see. That film is three things mixed together — body oil and skin soil from clothing, undissolved detergent, and fabric softener, which is designed to cling to fabric and clings just as happily to stainless steel.
In a hard-water home there is a fourth layer: mineral scale on the heating element, which the residue then sticks to.
Removing that requires three separate jobs, and no single ingredient does all three:
- A surfactant to lift greasy soil off the metal and hold it in the water so it drains away.
- Alkalinity to make that possible at all — fats and oils do not break down in neutral water.
- An oxidiser to attack the stained, set-in part of the film that a surfactant alone will not shift.
The format debate only becomes interesting once you ask which formats can carry all three.
Why oxygen bleach has to be dry
The oxidiser used in most serious washer cleaners is sodium percarbonate. It is a solid, and it stays completely inert until it meets water — at which point it breaks apart into hydrogen peroxide and soda ash and releases active oxygen.
That is exactly why it cannot be sold as a liquid. Put sodium percarbonate in a bottle of water and it starts reacting immediately; within weeks you have a bottle of flat, spent solution. Liquid products that advertise oxygen chemistry are carrying stabilised hydrogen peroxide instead, at a much lower active level, because that is the only version that survives on a shelf.
So the honest version of the format question is not which format cleans better. It is which format can carry an oxidiser at full strength — and the answer is a dry one.
Format by format, honestly
Liquid
Genuinely good at: dissolving instantly and evenly, reaching narrow passages the moment the cycle starts, and letting you vary the dose. If you want to wipe a gasket by hand, a liquid is easier to apply to a cloth than a powder.
The trade-off: it cannot carry percarbonate, and a good part of what you are buying and shipping is water. On a cold or short cycle a liquid will still disperse, which is a real advantage — but dispersing is not the same as cleaning.
Tablet
Genuinely good at: convenience, and it can carry dry oxidisers.
The trade-off: a tablet has to be pressed into a solid shape, which means binders and compression agents that do no cleaning. It also has to dissolve from the outside in, so on a short or lukewarm cycle the centre can still be intact when the water drains — the origin of the common complaint about undissolved lumps in the drum.
Powder
Genuinely good at: carrying percarbonate at full strength alongside soda ash and a surfactant, with no water and no binders. Loose powder has far more surface area than a pressed tablet, so it dissolves faster despite being the same chemistry.
The trade-off: it needs heat. Percarbonate is temperature-activated, so on a cold cycle a good part of the dose does nothing. Powder also has to be kept dry — which is why ours is sealed in single-dose packets rather than a tub you open twelve times.
The variable that beats all three
If you take one thing from this: water temperature matters more than format.
A powder or tablet run on a cold cycle will underperform a liquid. The same powder run on a Tub Clean or the hottest normal cycle will outperform both. When someone says a tub cleaner did nothing, the cycle temperature is the first thing to check, well before the product.
Two other things people get wrong, regardless of what they bought: running the cleaner alongside a load of laundry (the cycle lifts soil into the water and deposits it straight back onto the fabric), and skipping the gasket. No product reaches the underside of a front-loader's door seal — that is a cloth-and-two-minutes job after the cycle ends.
What about chlorine bleach?
It is cheap and people have used it for decades, but it is the wrong tool twice over. It has no effect on limescale, and used at full strength as a monthly routine it is hard on the rubber door seal over time — the part you were trying to protect. Oxygen chemistry does the residue job without that trade-off.
What we make, and why
Our Washing Machine Cleaner is a powder, in 4.4 oz single-dose packets, and the formula follows the three jobs above: sodium percarbonate for the oxidiser, sodium carbonate for alkalinity, a low-foaming surfactant for the grease, sodium citrate to handle hard water, and a neutral mineral salt to keep the powder free-flowing. No chlorine bleach, no phosphates, no added fragrance and no dye.
Single-dose packets exist for a specific reason rather than for tidiness: percarbonate draws moisture from the air, and a tub that gets opened every month slowly loses strength. A sealed packet is the same on month twelve as on day one.
To be clear about what it is not: this is a cleaner, not a sanitizer, and we make no germ-kill claim for it. It removes the residue that odor-causing bacteria live in, which is why the smell goes. A product that sanitizes a washing machine has to be registered with the EPA for that use.
If you can see chalky white scale on the heating element, that is established limescale rather than residue, and it needs a descaler — our Descaler is the right tool for that job. Many hard-water households do both: descale a few times a year, clean monthly.
Common questions
Is a powder harder to use than a liquid?
No. Tear the packet, tip it into the empty drum, run a Tub Clean or the hottest normal cycle. There is nothing to measure and nothing to pour.
Will powder leave residue in the drum?
Not on a hot cycle, which is what it is dosed for. Undissolved residue is a cold-cycle problem, and it is far more common with pressed tablets than with loose powder.
Which format is best for a front-loader?
The same answer as for a top-loader. The machine type changes where the residue collects, not the chemistry that removes it. What matters is running it in an empty drum, with heat, and wiping the gasket afterwards.
Run any tub cleaner in an empty drum with no detergent and no laundry, and follow your machine manufacturer's own cleaning guidance.
